Why Do We Travel?

May 1, 2017

This will be a working blog post and one that I am very excited about. My idea for this post spawned from a conversation I had with my mother and younger sister in a rental car lost in the hills of the central Italian region of Abruzzo. They said, “Kyle, you better not forget about us. Do you miss us when you travel?” I thought about that and I told them, “I wont. The reason I travel to appreciate and love you guys more.” I only began to truely understand this toward the end of my last adventure when I was traveling through India, Myanmar, and Thailand. The feeling I love most about traveling is being inspired, fascinated, and curious at every turn. What that means, at its core, is being able to fall in love with a moment, at any moment. Traveling reminds me how to do that.

But the question begs many more ever-changing answers, why do we travel?

I will be adding answers every time I think of a reason.

  • To appreciate what we have at home
  • To meet people
  • To feel free
  • To find higher meanings
  • To spawn creativity
  • To swim in the bluest waters in the world
  • To drink wine in the park in the daytime with complete strangers
  • To get lost and get found over and over again
  • To discover new passions
  • To meet friends of friends
  • To start over
  • To teach ourselves how to fall in love with a moment
  • To have the time to be present
  • To have the time to focus on ourselves
  • To have the time to focus on our own project
  • To have the time to think
  • To find inspiration
  • To view areas of the world I have only seen in magazines or viewed on television
  • For the thrill of adventure.
  • For the excitement of delving into the unknown and the adrenaline rush that follows when an unfamiliar situation turns out unexpectedly positive.
  • Because of a burning curiosity to understand the world and the people who live in it.
  • To know what each country, village, and mountain is like firsthand.
  • To better understand myself and what I value when searching for my next home and next steps in life.
  • To prove to myself that if I want to go somewhere/do something, I can. And to show the rest of the world that they can too.
  • We travel alone because some things are meant to be experienced alone
  • We travel alone we it gives us more time to learn about ourselves
  • We travel with other people to be inspired by others
  • To feel the spirit of another person
  • To feel the spirit of someone you know in a new situation
  • To feel the spirit of someone you don’t know in a new situation
  • To get work experience
  • To learn social adaptation
  • To have time to draw
  • To drink cheaper and better wine
  • To eat cheaper and better food
  • To avoid paying taxes to the US Government
  • To understand the perspectives of other people our age who come from different background

What are your reasons?
