When asked, why do you want to do impact investing? Most people respond, “to do well and do good,” or “to leave the world a better place,” or “to combat climate change with capital.”
These are all fine answers, but the question is different. It asks why YOU would want to do impact investing. What about impact investing is attracting YOU, as a person. It is probably something closer to “makes me sleep well at night,” or “makes me feel like I contribute to the world,” or “makes me feel like my children are proud.” The question is more personal and asks about our personal motivations.
This is important. For impact investing to scale, there needs to be a cultural shift in the way we approach capital. This will ultimately occur at the individual level. So recognizing why WE, as individuals, are doing this work or this investment style is a necessary stepping stone to repurposing capital for impact.
